Our American influence on the rest of the world obviously knows no bounds...nor does it know no shame. "McNifica" says it all, at at 1000 colons (~$2) how could Costa Ricans resist?
Quite the interesting statue in downtown San Jose showing a Cholla lady. These people live in the north of Costa Rica and known to be quite large. I'm shown here with a few of my other teacher friends whom I'm traveling with. "Large and in-charge."
The National Theater build around the turn of the last century. The money used to built this mostly marble building were raised by levying taxes on the coffee exports and also on rice and beans. Gotta love the interplay of rice and beans and theater!
Irazu Volcano to the north of San Jose is shrouded in clouds.
Shrouded in the clouds is an active volcano, one of many encircling this tectonic depression that is often referred to as the Central Valley. Most of CR's population lives in the Central Valley.
We arrived safely in Costa Rica this morning - great to finally be here! Sunny, temperatures in the mid 80ºFs and beautiful scenery. I'm going to explore a bit of the San Jose tonight, Costa Rica's capital city. For now I've posted a panoramic photo of the view out of my hotel window.
Costa Rica is a relatively small country with a total surface area of about 20,000 square miles, about the size of West Virginia. Costa Rica doesn't have the 4 defined seasons like we have up north; regions around the equator are known more for their rainy and dry seasons. It just so happens that we arrived here in Costa Rica today just at the tail end of dry season. In addition to the warmer than normal temperatures, the country is very dry right now. Locals, called Ticos, say the rains should return any day now. As I was walking around the city this afternoon I felt rain drops, the first of many more to come as we transition into the rainy season.
I hope to post more later tonight after exploring a bit...hoping you're doing well! How was the Orleans-Hanna test this morning? Good luck with the Chaos Project, I'm counting on you to win!
